Take Tamae Watanabe for inspiration… The 73-year-old Japanese woman smashed her own 2002 record as the oldest woman to scale Mount Everest, which she had set initially at age 63.
Watanabe reached Everest’s 29,029-foot-high summit from the mountain’s northern side in Tibet on Saturday morning, along with four other team members. Weather on the mountain had improved this week, after creating challenging conditions for many expeditions this season and forcing several to turn back without summiting.
The oldest person to climb Everest is a Nepalese man, Min Bahadur Sherchan, who reached the summit in 2008 at the age of 76.
You’re never too young for adventure, either: California teen Jordan Romero holds the record for the youngest person to successfully climb Everest, scaling the peak in 2010 at the age of 13.
While Explorers’ Corner doesn’t offer Everest expeditions, we have a grand slate of adventures both tough and not-so-grueling: find the one that’s just right for you on our website: www.explorerscorner.com.
